Isagenix uses Vertex as their primary tax solutions engine. Types of transactions are: sales transactions Tax Types are Global: SUT, GST, VAT
  • Accuracy of tax determination to jurisdictional level
  • Address Cleansing
  • Report generation - easily created and understood
  • Ability to create tax rule changes
  • Simple Exemption Certificate record creation
  • Contracted with Vertex Managed Returns for US & CA reporting
  • Simplicity of managing Drivers & Mappings
  • Vertex University
  • Vertex Annual Exchange
  • Log Files Area - Ability to search for a sales order in real time rather than pulling several files to find one sales order - this will help during live testing rather than waiting until the sales order is posted to the database.
Customer Service team is top notch, they've assisted me on my issues and have also educated me in some. I appreciate when my issue is brought to Vertex IT to decipher if a problem truly requires a fix. Accuracy of Vertex tax determination and complexity of taxing jurisdictions makes for better customer experience as well as quality reporting to the tax authorities

We use Vertex for sales transactions to help ensure that the rate of tax being charged is accurate, we use it for both US and Canadian transactions. Along with ensuring the accuracy of the tax rate being charged, we use Vertex to help manage the taxability of equipment throughout the US and Canada.
  • Updating sales tax rates
  • Communicating changes to software
  • Providing customer support
  • Providing back up information or resources for rules
  • More intuitive set up with tax assist rules
  • More customization of reports
We sell to the majority of states, with the differing reporting requirements for states, cities, counties, etc., the information and reports Vertex is able to provide, makes it easier to provide the correct information, to the correct jurisdictions. Also, Vertex maintaining the correct sales tax rate takes the pressure off of having to do that function in house.

Use it across the organization for the food division. Solves the issue of sales and use tax. Currently looking at implementing tax for purchase transactions.
  • Current tax rates for invoicing
  • Ability to override tax
  • Easy interface to Vertex Returns
  • More streamlined flow for beverage (sugar tax) taxation
  • Easier creation of tax assist rules
  • More configuration setup control at the user level
  • Easier way to locate user defined tax rules
  • Easier navigation to view mappings and how individual rules for states
Allows custom tax rules to be setup without requesting custom code changes from Vertex. I would like to see Vertex provide more education on the configuration setups.

We primarily use Vertex to support our sales transactions. Vertex calculates our US Sales and consumers use tax. We also use it for all foreign VAT tax. All of our sales tax exemption certificates are handled with in the Vertex system as well.
  • Keeps up on the tax law, frequently updating they system to reflect changes.
  • Vertex has great reporting capabilities that enables us to use data for trends in purchases, managing licensing requirements, and carries over into the income tax reports for apportionment requirements.
  • Innovative - continually improving their processes, including feedback from customers to develop the next new tool to make tax calculation and reporting easier.
  • Some of the reporting tools are only usable to those on the Cloud platform.
  • A lot of the import/export/ and monthly reporting processes could be automated.
  • While this is minor - the app is missing some features that would add convenience. For example, the ability to choose multiple reports to delete at once. Currently you can delete one report or all reports - but can't choose a group. You can't create groups or favorites in your profile. If I'm running reports for my US tax, I have to go through the entire list. There isn't a shortcut that allows me to only access those reports.
Vertex is pretty diverse in that it can support large or small organizations. If you're looking for a robust tax calculation engine then Vertex is a great option. It offers the sales and use tax calculations, reporting that supports all tax types and that can be used organization wide, and the ability to prepare the required sales tax returns. They keep up on all the tax rules so you don't have to and their customer service is good as well.

At this point I've not found a reason that it wouldn't be suited in a tax environment.

We are supporting both AR and AP transactions with Vertex and use them for US Sales Tax, VAT, and GST. Currently, we have Vertex implemented for about 20 countries all over the globe and supporting Value added tax.
  • Tax calculation in case of triangulation.
  • Tax automation in case of customer certificates.
  • Automated tax rate update.
  • With Tax Assist Rules, you can easily get your tax calculation system fitted to country-specific requirements.
  • Reporting: Vertex VAT Compliance is not fully ready to support all EU country's requirements.
  • Data storage.
  • Online reporting in VVC: many countries require to report VAT Declaration in an electronic way. This function is still missing for some of the countries from VVC.
For India tax Vertex is less appropriate; in Vertex Exchange in Barcelona this year, I have talked to many Product Owners and learned that there is no current practice for India Tax Calculation in Vertex O. However, Vertex is well suited for the US region and EU region.

Vertex O Series is being used across the whole organization to calculate tax on sales. It allows us to ensure we are charging the correct tax rates in multiple jurisdictions for both our retail outlets & direct sales made through our internet, call center, and catalog division. It is extremely useful to us in dealing with tax rate changes and also with tax holidays.
  • Vertex O Series recognizes all tax rate changes, which is very useful when you're operating in multiple jurisdictions.
  • Vertex O Series helps us to deal with tax holidays. This has saved us a lot of time and gives us confidence that we are getting tax right during these tax holidays.
  • It would be helpful if Vertex O Series would add new taxability categories. For our company specifically this would include some items such as motorized bicycles and children's hunting clothing.
  • Working with Vertex Customer Support is sometimes a struggle. I feel that they are not always able to understand & effectively help with complex issues.
Vertex O Series is extremely important for getting the right tax rate when making retail sales in multiple taxing jurisdictions. Having both the Vertex O Series and Vertex Returns products together is a huge asset when it comes to preparing and filing returns in multiple taxing jurisdictions. I appreciate that even if Vertex does not yet have content for all scenarios, you have the ability to customize and build your own rules when needed. The more I learn to do in Vertex, the more useful it is for addressing taxing issues we encounter so I greatly appreciate the guides and training / learning opportunities that Vertex provides.

We use Vertex for sales and purchases transactions as well. Regarding to tax types we use it for US sales tax, use tax and value added tax as well. It helps us to prepare monthly, bi-monthly and quarterly returns. Also different type of reports such as Spanish SII, intrastat, sales listing.
  • user interface
  • ticket system
  • structure of returns
  • loading time
Pro: I can prepare VAT returns from start until filing. It creates a print view that is the exact copy that I need to file. Also, I am able to extract data so I can compare it to my reconciliation easily.

Contra: The sales listing report is not well detailed. It shows only the amount of sales but I cannot examine the transactions that were considered.

Straumann uses Vertex for NAM sales tax transactions only. The company uses the tax rates for US and Canada for sales tax transactions. We have been using this software for years and converted from Q Series to O Series in 2021. We used Vertex consultants for the upgrade as resources are very tight internally. Once implemented the software works seamlessly.

We use Vertex on two platforms, Netsuite and BigCommerce. We are performing API calls when BigCommerce makes the sale, when the sales order gets imported to Netsuite, and when the cash sale receipt is generated. We use U.S. sales tax, but products are taxed differently in different states, such as digital items, clothing items, and food items. We also have many customers who have tax exemption certificates, and we are able to make them tax exempt in both of our platforms.
  • Ability to customize with our complex business needs
  • Customer Support is focused on our business needs
  • Easy to install on BigCommerce
  • Detailed instructions on installation
  • Installation with Netsuite was more complex (partly because that's how Netsuite is)
  • Sometimes making a sales order not taxable (since we have exempt customers) can take longer than it should
  • Sometimes the tax is different between our two platforms, and it can take some effort to make it match
Vertex is the most customizable software that we've found, especially for the price. We have many complex tax rules, with food, clothing, and digital items that are taxed differently in different states. We also have tax exempt customers who are not able to be taxed, which can make taxing software much more complex. Vertex is a much better solution for these issues than other tax softwares that we've found. Other softwares did not allow us to grant exemption to some states or products. Vertex works much better for complex businesses, or businesses that are hoping to expand in the near future (since switching softwares can be arduous)

I implemented Vertex O Version 9 with SAP, ECM Certificate Module, and Indirect Tax Returns Package. Vertex people worked endlessly around the clock to ensure all three platforms worked properly once the On switch was turned on. It was a lot of work but so well worth it when I look back at all the manual labor we had to create to prepare a tax return to after having these three modules in place. It was a breeze... so well worth it during audits. It was easy to drill down to the invoice line and look up the exemption certificates by state. Vertex receives a 5-star rating for indirect tax software with updated tax technology.
  • Tax rates
  • Complexity of Tax Rules
  • Exempting sales from certificates
  • Tax Compliance
  • Mapping
Vertex has the capability of changing the tax rulings by state. An example of this is sales tax holidays. Vertex creates the appropriate upload file for state tax portals.

We use Vertex O Series and Vertex SAP Accelerator with Accelerator Tools for sales and purchase transactions for US and Canadian tax. We operate in over 45 states in the US and have direct pay permits in several of those states. We file over one thousand returns annually and also utilize Vertex SUT Compliance Service (formerly Vertex Sales & Use Tax Returns Outsourcing) to help with that compliance.
  • Tax Calculation
  • Tax Determination
  • Better Integration with SAP
  • Better Integration with Ariba
We went from manual tax rate selection via table to having Vertex automatically populate tax rates for both Sales and Purchases. For Purchases and AP, we had individual AP processors as well as buyers, procurement, and local accounting personnel manually review each AP Invoice, determine taxability, and use specific tax codes that would accrue for the plant jurisdiction. For sales, it was similar where each salesperson would have to determine the taxability of the transaction, determine whether each customer had a tax exemption on file, and pick an appropriate tax rate that would determine tax for the transaction. Vertex works great to remove the manual selection of tax rates and automates the taxability of transactions.

Lease Transactions
  • Allows for Various Taxability Fields
  • Long history of working with leases
  • Certificate Managment. Being able to use it to track exemption expiration and email customers to request new ones.
  • The sales and purchases modules should be sold together. It is very difficult to justify the purchases module but it would make the product more sticky and therefore the ability to retain customers would be greater.
  • Some of the processes within the system should be simplified. Try using Avalara or Thomson Reuters and you will see some of the clunkyness of Vertex.
Leases is the strongest point. T/R is still trying to develop theirs and Avalara just purchased a company.

We use Vertex Indirect tax for both U.S. sales and U.S. use tax. We find it easy to upload / import sales transaction data into Vertex and print off returns in every taxable state.
  • Easy to import data.
  • Tax rules and laws are updated monthly.
  • Ability to upload returns directly to state that allow for that.
  • Vertex interfaces with other ERP's we use, which is wonderful.
  • Their support staff is always willing and available to help.
  • It would be nice if more states were available for uploads.
  • I'd like to Vertex to make sure all divisions using Vertex is updated with all the new tax rates.
  • It would be wonderful if I could get a free ticket to the annual Vertex Exchanges. :-)
Vertex took a return like California and made it a lot easier to prepare by working with California to make it easier to just upload our data and since New Mexico has switched to Gross Tax method, I would like to see them do the same with New Mexico or at least make it easier to upload the data to New Mexico instead of manually entering it.

We use Vertex O Series for all of our on-system branches within the US and Canada. This is around 100 branches. O Series has taken the sales tax decision making away from a person and made it electronic which has proven very beneficial over the years by reducing our audit assessments.
  • The tax ids are very granular and give us a very precise tax calculation.
  • Vertex O Series gives us very detailed reports that are used in determining Nexus requirements.
  • I'm the manager of our team and not in the details of O Series.
I think it's best suited for large companies who have multiple legal entities which are registered in multiple states or jurisdictions.

We license Vertex Indirect Tax Returns for our own compliance in addition to a separate license for our third-party "service bureau" customers. We also licensed Vertex O Series for Leasing and are currently in the implementation process. Our Vertex solutions are utilized for tax compliance on US sales transactions, and we plan to incorporate our Canadian VAT sales transactions in the near future.
  • Vertex does a great job of building in-house industry expertise (leasing in our case) so they truly understand the tax technical and compliance obstacles we face day to day.
  • Vertex actively solicits for and responds to customer feedback on development and product roadmap suggestions. The Leasing users group is an example where Vertex takes an active role in communicating with and taking feedback from our industry.
  • Vertex tax updates are very timely and thorough, which makes the compliance process less stressful for our team.
  • Their leasing module has fewer customers than say retail, so product content development has been less robust, but still far better than their competitors.
  • The sales tax calendar tool is functional, but with a bit more development would probably be used by a lot more customers.
  • We need an accurate count of the number of tax returns filed by the legal entity each month. We haven't found an easy way to extract this information which seems like should be readily available. I would like to see some development in the KPI area of Vertex Indirect Returns.
Vertex has a commanding presence in the leasing vertical attributed to their investment in really understanding the unique tax complexities we face. Vertex Consulting members are comprised of tax professionals that utilized Vertex O Series for Leasing when they were in private industry. Said simply they get leasing because they've been on the other side of the fence so to speak.

Vertex O is being used in the US and Canada for both sales and purchases. It is not used globally. We use it for sales, purchases and exemption certificates.
  • Rates for sales.
  • Allows multiple flex fields to help correctly determine taxability.
  • Updates the tax rules when the change in a state.
  • A trusted vendor doesn't work the best.
  • We have an issue with the tax drivers, for us, it is material groups and that isn't always taxed in the same manner across states.
  • Vertex does not have the best global platform yet, needs to improve LAO, especially Brazil capability.
Vertex is well suited for large manufacturing companies that sell to all states. All the rates are automatically applied. Like any system, it's all in the configuration, so it takes a lot of work to implement Vertex.

We use Vertex O series On Demand for Sales and Purchase transactions at Covestro and at Bayer Corp. Covestro LLC is a Chemical company, with a BIG presence in Texas. At Bayer Corp we used it for Healthcare, Animal Health, CropScience, and Chemicals and had a presence in many States. We support US Sales and Use tax, Canadian VAT tax, and Vertex Consulting (Hal Burchfield) assisted us with a VAT implementation for a number of EU countries. At Covestro LLC, we may be interested in a Brazil implementation when we begin our S4 Hana upgrade project in 2024.
  • Great monthly updates of rates and rules and locations
  • A very flexible tool for user defined decision making
  • Ability to customize for specific scenarios that may be specific to our Company
  • We pay Vertex compliance to put numbers on our Tax returns. Tax manager would like them to pick up our monthly files rather than him having to supply them. I'm not sure if that will ever happen, but the Tax manager said he never has to massage the data.....just gathers the Tax2000 reports and provides.
  • Would like to see some of the LCR Dixon tools to become part of the standard delivered functionality now that Susi is part of Vertex now. Especially the New testing tool. I asked about this at conference, but they are still evaluating all that.
I have been using this tool for 23 years now and have forged a wonderful relationship with the heavy hitters at Vertex. They are always helpful and when I pick up the phone with a specific question, they answer!! I am trustful of the software and the people at Vertex. Vertex O Series is being used by Kimberly-Clark to make tax determinations on both the purchasing and sales side. The biggest business problem that it addressed for us at the time of implementation was certificate entry information and certificate storage. With ECM, we were able to more accurately account for customer exemptions and store certificate images for audit reference.
  • Coming from Vertex Q to O, the dashboard functionality made the transition very easy.
  • Vertex has a multitude of places to get assistance. Documentation is available as well as submitting questions to be answered by a Vertex resource.
  • Communication well in advance of changes and upgrades.
  • Vertex University has provided valuable training to both seasoned Vertex users and employees from other regions where we are considering implementation
  • VAT functionality especially in Brazil - More detail for those looking to implement
  • More granular Vertex Mapping Categories as states are focusing heavily on certain topics that are too general to calculate consistent accurate taxability without rules for companies who do not use commodity codes.
  • Ability to add individual states to original certificate entries on customers in mass without adding one at a time or seeing the line as individual vs included in the overall larger entry
  • Global ability to be a one stop option for return review, return generation and return filing including all required documentation (e-invoices, etc.) with all jurisdictions
Vertex is well suited for US customers with a large amount of exemption certificates in multiple states. Less Suited: Globally in regions where there is complexity with local jurisdictions. Also requires multiple solutions not offered by Vertex to file complete and file return information (e-invoices).

Vertex O Series is used for U.S. and international transaction taxes across the whole organization. It addresses all of those that SAP native functionality cannot and also avoids maintenance.
  • User-friendly GUI
  • Transaction tester is very useful and user friendly.
  • Tax assist rules are not that complicated to build.
  • Product taxability mapping changes is not user friendly.
  • The import and export of tax data should be available at respective functionality area and not at tax administration - specific functionality to import/export.
  • The data extraction and reading is not straightforward, e.g., I cannot review my taxability mapping of product and tax category next to it. I need to filter out two sets of information and do a Vlookup and then put them together to review. There are many other such examples.
Best for post calculations and allocations.

  • Quick sync process with ERP system
  • Managed Services for preparing returns
  • Support can only be reached via email
  • Clarify that "Vertex Premium" still requires a lot of attention from the users
  • Responsiveness is slow - can be very frustrating when you're in a hurry and you can't call someone
The program itself works well, and now that I've used it for a year, I am comfortable with the maintenance process. However, it's very frustrating that all communications with the support team are done via email. It feels like they assume our job is 100% sales tax, so when they do finally respond there is very little time to react. Now that we upgraded to Managed Services from Vertex Premium, things have improved (for an additional cost, of course)

We currently use Vertex O Series On Premise for Sales and Consumer Use Tax. We also have the Exemption Certificate Manager to manager our customer tax exemption certificates. We have various Plus Tools used within our SAP ERP system and have plans to possibly get a few more Plus Tools.
  • Vertex provides flexibility in its tax data mapping options
  • Vertex is always looking for new ways to better meet the needs of their customers
  • Vertex has knowledgeable staff to help with any needs that customers may have.
  • Vertex can continue to automate their current system and find ways to improve not only usability but also speed of creating new mappings, new entries, etc.
  • Vertex can continue to improve 9.0 by making the system more user friendly
  • Vertex can look at ways to improve customer experience and specific mapping needs for smaller industries that aren't as widely represented as others like e commerce.
Vertex is well suited to enhance any sales and use tax processes within an organization. Implementation does take a pretty large amount of time but once the system and mapping design are in place, the system is easy to update and maintain. New updates like 8.0 to 9.0 can be a bit of a pain and require additional resources to keep the system up to date but hopefully, these types of updates will be far and few between.

Our company uses Vertex for sales transactions in the US and Canada. We do not use Vertex for any purchase transactions. Vertex calculates all sales/use and VAT (Canada) for our company. Our company also uses Vertex Returns for filing sales tax returns. We utilize Vertex's RateLocator tool for tax rate lookups. Our company does not currently utilize the Vertex Exemption Certificate Manager, but we plan on doing so in the future.
  • Accurate tax calculations
  • Updated rates monthly
  • Fast customer service responses
  • Occasional issues with addresses calculating incorrect tax rates
  • Tax assist creator could be much simpler
  • Limited support for Vertex L
Vertex has been a very reliable and accurate tax calculation engine in the 9 years I have used it. It is relatively easy to learn and to teach others how to use its functionalities. Vertex does a really good job in ensuring that the tax rates are updated and they release an update once a month prior to month end. Customer service responds quickly to issues. The Vertex Returns package is very use to use and it is quite easy to transfer the data from Vertex L/O into Vertex Returns. Vertex's RateLocator tool is very simple but effective in looking up tax rates, either by jurisdiction or by zip code.

Right now we are using Vertex O Series to input and monitor all of our customers' Exemption Certificates. We are gradually pulling all divisions of our company into SAP and Vertex O. This software has made it easier to address tax exemption issues as well as being able to provide a copy of exempt certificates for auditors.
  • Integrates exempt certificates into our system which helps A/R prepare invoices properly and prevents short pays.
  • The only thing I can see is uploading can be made easier.
If a company has more than 100 regular customers or 100,000.00 dollars in sales they should consider the benefits of looking at Vertex O.

The company (including the tax dept) utilizes Vertex O to maintain and retain exemption certificates, calculate and retain sales records, and automate the use tax accruals.
  • Calculation of Sales Tax
  • Accurate Sales Tax Rates
  • Excellent solution for Exemption Certificates
  • Interface could be more user-friendly
  • Updating Exemption certificates in mass (such as expiration dates) should be easier
Vertex is an excellent all in one solution for sales and use tax. On the sales tax side you can set up exceptions, exemption certificates, special rates. The same can be done for Use Tax.
